China was “goaded” by President Donald Trump into making an error in negotiations by escalating the trade war, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters on Wednesday.
“All this…was driven by the president’s strategy,” Bessent said outside the White House. “He and I had a long talk on Sunday, and this was his strategy all along, and you might even say that he goaded China into a bad position.”
“They responded – they have shown themselves to the world to be the bad actors. And we are willing to cooperate with our allies and with our trading partners who did not retaliate.”
Bessent added: “It wasn’t a hard message: Don’t retaliate. Things will turn out well.”
The White House later reiterated the message on X.
The treasury secretary’s comments come as President Trump on Wednesday announced 125% tariffs against China after the nation responded to the United States’ 104% tariff announcement on Tuesday with an 84% tariff on US imports.
Additionally, Trump on Wednesday rewarded 75 countries eager to bargain with the US on trade deals with a 90-day pause on tariffs in addition to a “substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%.”
Despite the corporate media spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt over the plan, US stocks made a stunning turnaround and surged on news of the paused tariffs – the greatest market rebound in nearly two decades.
Following the remarkable recovery, Trump’s deal-making prowess was highlighted on social media.
“Many of you in the media clearly missed the Art of the Deal,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the press.
Trump himself reacted to the market upswing, with cameras catching him saying, “Gotta be a record.”
It remains to be seen if China will finally come to the negotiating table, as some are claiming.
