Former U.S. Department of State official Mike Benz spoke with ex-Florida GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz this week about attempted Donald Trump assassin Ryan Routh, with Benz saying he believes there is an extremely high chance he was working with the U.S. government.
Considering Routh tried to murder Trump during the final weeks of the Biden presidency, if Benz is correct it would mean the Biden administration could have been behind the plot.
Gaetz asked, “What do you think the percentage likelihood is that Ryan Routh was working for someone who was a contractor or subcontractor of the United States government or one of its entities?”
“Ninety-five percent,” Benz answered, explaining, “I think it’s done informally though. Which is to say that – This is not to say that the CIA did it, or the Pentagon did it – because, you have rogue cells that have informal networks that they set up to do this sort of thing. And this is the sort of thing you can really only get with electronic communications and a full, sort of, network map of every single person that Ryan Routh was interacting with. And, what we’re told is the trial has been delayed because the volume of this is so intense despite the fact that we’re told he was virtually homeless with his homes in foreclosure.”
Gaetz responded, “Yeah, I’m not buying that this was just some mentally ill person wandering around. I think that someone was operating Ryan Routh.”
“Benz is usually right about everything. So the fact that he’s 95 percent sure our government was involved with the Trump assassin is terrifying,” Gaetz wrote in an 𝕏 post where he shared the video clip.
Former NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden made a similar remark back in September 2024, saying that with the “alleged Trump shooter’s personal and public participation in military activity in Ukraine, it is hard to imagine this White House’s agencies can claim zero contact—’clean hands.’ Something of an Oswald vibe, here. Congress should get answers.”
Earlier this week, federal prosecutors revealed Routh sought to obtain military-grade weapons such as rocket launchers from a Ukrainian contact he met during his mercenary days when he was trying to recruit fighters to send to the Ukrainian frontline on behalf of the Ukrainian government amid its ongoing fight with Russia.
Fox News reported Routh asked his source, “send me a rpg [rocket-propelled grenade] or stinger, and I will see what we can do… [Trump] is not good for Ukraine. I need equipment so that Trump cannot get elected. Going to the local store for such an item is impossible – however you are at war so those items lost and destroyed daily – one missing would not be noticed.”
