A highly-illegal ‘street takeover’ was allowed to carry on for hours this weekend due to a “lack of available officers” in Portland, Oregon, according to reports.
The shocking episode of lawlessness kicked off at around 4 p.m. on Sunday near the Williamette River in East Portland.
Thugs and hooligans hijacked an intersection and began “revving engines and spinning tires,” the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) confirmed to KATU.
Eyewitness video shows a large crowd gathered in the road and surrounding area as drivers performed doughnuts and other stunts in their vehicles.
At one point, a car smashed into a participant, knocking him to the ground. It is unclear if he was injured.

“A few officers were dispatched to monitor the situation from a block away, with their lights on, which encouraged some participants to leave, though not all complied,” KATU reports.
Local residents and workers reportedly expressed concerns for their security, but PPB claims their ‘safe departure from the area was ensured.’
The ‘sideshow’ went on until around 8 p.m. when it finally “fizzled out and people left,” PPB says.
“We treat these events as a crowd control event,” a PPB spokesperson said. “We need adequate resources to address them.”
Authorities reminded the public that street takeovers are unlawful and can result in “jail time, fines, and towed vehicles,” although no action appears to have been taken against any of Sunday’s participants.
