A district judge in Texas on Monday reduced the bail of 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, the high school student charged with the brutal murder of fellow student Austin Metcalf, 16, who was stabbed to death at a track meet in Frisco earlier this month.
On Monday, Collin County district judge Angela Tucker reduced Anthony’s bond from $1,000,000 to $250,000, allowing the teen’s family to bail him out while he awaits trial under house arrest.
Metcalf’s mother, Meghan, who was in the courtroom when Judge Tucker reduced Anthony’s bond, reportedly wept as the decision was announced.
At the hearing, Judge Tucker, a black Republican, said, “they’ve never had the security issues they’ve faced with this case,” referring to supposedly racist posts about her and towards Anthony’s family from people upset over Metcalf’s murder.
On Tuesday, The Daily Mail reported: “The revelation comes after a spokesperson for the family said they can’t leave their after their address was leaked online, leading to ‘graphic and racist threats,’ which included images of ‘black children with knives stuck in their head.'”
Meanwhile, Anthony’s family was also criticized for supposedly buying a new house and private security after raising over $400K in donations.
The Sun reports:
Over $420,000 has been donated to Anthony’s family in an online fundraiser for the alleged killer after he reportedly faced racist threats following Metcalf’s murder.
During the judge’s ruling on Monday, prosecutors asked Anthony’s dad why he couldn’t use the donated money to pay the original bond to release his son from jail.
Andrew Anthony responded that the money was going to be used for his son’s legal defense.
He also said the cash would be used for security to protect Anthony after he reportedly received racist threats since the stabbing.
Andrew also said the family plans to move into a new house for extra safety.
Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the heart on April 3 during a District 11-5A championship track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco following an altercation. He fled the scene, but was later located by police.
