President Trump asked Republican politicians to abstain from attempting to hijack trade negotiations, assuring Americans that countries are lining up to make deals in the face of reciprocal tariffs.
“And don’t let some of these politicians go around saying… you know, cuz I’m telling you, these countries are calling us up, kissing my ass,” Trump described at the National Republican Committee Dinner in Washington on Tuesday.
“They are dying to make a deal,” he added.
“‘Please, please sir, make a deal. I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything, sir,'” Trump said imitating world leaders that have come to the bargaining table following last week’s Liberation Day tariff announcements.
The president went on to point out if certain Republicans have their way and relegate trade negotiations to Congress, the deals – and America – would collapse.
“And then I’ll see some rebel Republican, you know, some guy that wants to grandstand, say, ‘I think that Congress should take over negotiations…’ Let me tell you, you don’t negotiate like I negotiate,” Trump said.
“[If] Congress takes over negotiating, sell America fast – because you’re going to go busted.”
He continued: “I just saw it today. A couple of your congressmen said, ‘I think we should get involved in the negotiation of the tariffs.’ Oh, that’s what I need, I need some some guy telling me how to negotiate.”
The president’s remarks come as leaders from 70 nations have called the White House seeking trade negotiations.
On Tuesday, the White House also slapped a 104% reciprocal tariff on China, after the Communist nation retaliated against Trump’s 34% Liberation Day tariff with a 34% tariff of their own.
On Wednesday, China announced it would impose an 84% tariff on imported US goods in response to the latest tariffs; however, America clearly has leverage in trade considering it is China’s number one market.
“According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. exported $143.5 billion of goods to China in 2024, while importing products worth $438.9 billion,” reports CNBC.
It remains to be seen how Trump will respond to China’s latest escalation, but according to Trump Commerce Secretary Scott Bessent, it won’t be good for the ChiComs.
“It’s unfortunate that the Chinese actually don’t want to come and negotiate, because they are the worst offenders in the international trading system,” Bessent told Fox Business Wednesday morning. “They have the most imbalanced economy in the history of the modern world, and I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them.”
In terms of what Trump’s doing, he’s been addressing for years how he’d go about forcing China to level the playing field, arguing the messenger is as important as the deal.
If China does decide to capitulate and come to the table, Eric Trump says it’s better to do it sooner than later.
“I wouldn’t want to be the last country that tries to negotiate a trade deal with @realDonaldTrump,” the president’s second son wrote on X last week. “The first to negotiate will win – the last will absolutely lose. I have seen this movie my entire life…”
